Burghley-Boutique-About

Enjoy all the pleasures and adventure of life under canvas

ABOUT

Perhaps the most magnificent Elizabethan House in England, this extraordinary seat, built between 1555 and 1587, offers a unique perspective into British history.

With 2,000 acres of spectacular grounds including a deer park and exquisite gardens, it is well loved by the public and has attracted admirers from all over the world.

Over the centuries its owners – the Cecil family – have preserved and safeguarded the entire estate with unwavering dedication. Designed originally by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, both its exteriors and interiors evolved over time to reflect the styles of passing eras, and now offer a fascinating archival inventory of architecture, decor and art.

In 1700, the construction of Burghley’s Walled Garden began. Set a little way away from the house, it would have been a significant hub of activity growing produce to supply the house. Nearly 300 years later it has finally been restored to its former glory. While it may no longer be growing fruit and vegetables to feed the masses entertained at the House, it retains a lively sense of action and is a superb setting for events and now, of course, luxury camping.

The 6th Marquess of Exeter, an Olympic gold medallist, IOC member and passionate horseman, was responsible for the tremendous equine event that is Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Hearing, in 1961, that Harewood House would no longer be able to host their three day event, he offered Burghley as an alternative. Since then it has grown into a hugely popular affair, drawing more than 167,000 visitors, 80 competitors and 600 exhibitors.

The addition of Burghley Boutique, a bespoke luxury glamping set up, offers guests the chance to stay right in the heart of the action while enjoying all the pleasures and adventure of life under canvas. Supplied by Portobello Tents, experts in the luxury glamping industry, and directed by the masterful hand of Laura Audley, their founder, Burghley Boutique will provide only the very highest standards of glamping. Laura, who grew up attending the Horse Trials, worked with eventers in New Zealand before returning to the UK to work for Blyth Tait after his 2001 Burghley win on Ready Teddy. Laura knows exactly what the Burghley Boutique guests are expecting from a weekend and she and her team look forward to welcoming you in September.

Please note that Burghley House is closed to visitors during Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
